highway goldenrod

a mid-september drive to upstate new york to hear songs from the midwest, i prepare my fingers and toes for one last dance on the earth before summer ends.

i notice the first signs of fire in the trees on sunday, but on friday, it was all green. the sun was warm and we danced barefoot in the grass among fields of goldenrod under the moon, a waxing gibbous, not quite full, but plenty ripe like the last summer fruit.
